Busy Week!

Hello parents and students,
We have completed another week of school and we are getting that much closer to the end of the year. However, this is not the time to drop the ball. Students have a test on government on Tuesday. They were given a review on Thursday and had one complete class period to work through the review. All of the answers to the review can be found in their notes. Students need to be spending at least 20 minutes a day studying for the test. Students in grade 4 and 5 need help focusing and it is not a good idea to simply send them in their bedroom and tell them to study. They need interaction with the content. Hold up a picture of Jack Layton and ask them to identify the leader of the NDP. If students focus on the review and know this content, they will do quite well. However, studying the night before for 15 minutes before will not guarantee a good grade.

Students also have their poetry project that are due on Tuesday. Students have been framing their information and placing it on their hangers over the past week. I have also given a link to some biome sites as we are becoming experts on assigned world biomes.

*Reminder that students who had a redo grammar quiz comment, have a retest on Monday!! Review adverbs, verbs, and adjectives.

Geometry Test

I usually post upcoming tests on the blog but students wrote this one down in their planners. Please sign these tests when they are sent home later this week. Students are also working on a difficult spelling test this week. Many of the students are finding our grade 5 spelling tests very easy so I am seeing how they will do with more difficult material. Each day we are reviewing and working on these words in class. Have a wonderful week and don't forget that Friday is Hot Lunch and Casual Day!

Poetry Project

Hello Parents,
I have sent home a poetry project handout with students this weekend. They need to bring the lyrics of a song that holds a special message for them to school on Tuesday. They also need to bring a hanger as we are starting to work on our poetry mobile. Students are also near completion of their geometry unit. We will be working on a review in class and will be completing our test by next week. Here is a copy of the poetry mobile that was sent home.

Dear Parents and Students,

Your child’s poetry mobile is due on Thursday, May 5th. Each student is to choose one of their favourite songs to present to the class by way of making a hanger mobile. Students need to come to school with their song lyrics and coat hangers as we will be working on this at school. This is part of their mini-poetry unit that we have been working on since March break. Students will be learning to look at songs as poems, find the rhyme scheme of the song and interpret the meaning of songs. The completed mobiles will be presented in class over several days. Students will need to bring an audio copy of their song to school as well.
Please have your child practice at home as they will receive one mark for their oral presentation and another mark for their mobile.

Welcome Back!

Welcome back from Spring Break. The flowers are coming up, we see the sun a little more often, and school is flying by. Students have been hard at work this week. In English we have started a new poetry unit and have been composing acrostic, couplets, and memorizing famous poems. In math, the grade 5's have been working on completing their fractions unit and are now doing some extra practice with adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators. The grade 5's will have a fractions test on Monday.

In science we have started a unit on habitats and communities. We have explored what a habitat is and what essential things plants and animals need for survival. Right now we are working on adaptations and creating animals that could exist on an imaginary planet. In socials students have learned a little bit about citizenship and what requirements people need to meet to become a Canadian citizen. We are now starting to study about different types of government and why countries need a government. Math books will be sent home with them tomorrow and parents can help their child study by taking a couple of questions from each section and having them show and explain to you how they figure them out.

New Assignment & Update

Hello Parents,
Students are having a very good time creating their final project for their novel study "Number the Stars". I wanted to create a project that was inovative and would use some of their great technical skills that they are developing. I think it's amazing how technical and innovative our children are becoming. I have attached a copy of our assignment page. This assignment is due on March 18th. This is the last Friday before March break.

Students also have a spelling test this Friday as well as a quiz on our novel study. I have posponed the 4's fraction quiz until Monday. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me.

Grade 4/5 Number the Stars
Final Assignment
Grade 4/5 students have partnered themselves in groups of 2 or 3. Students will be working in class to create an interview that would have taken place during the time period of the 1940’s-1960’s.
Step 1: Students are able to choose one or two main characters from their book (depending on how many group members they have).
Step 2: Students then need to create questions that are based upon events that occurred in their novel study, “Number the Stars”
Example Questions for interviewing Annemarie and Ellen
1. How did the two of you meet?
2. Tell us what life was like before the Germans occupied Denmark.
3. How did the Nazi occupation change your life during the time both of you lived in Copenhagen?
4. Ellen, tell us what happened to your family during the Jewish holiday when you were at the synagogue?
5. Annemarie, how did your family help the Rosens?
Students may choose to do the following characters: - Uncle Henrick, Mama, Annemarie, Ellen, Peter Nielsen, Kirsti, or an approved character by your teacher
Step 3: Students will create their interview questions in class.
Step 4: Interview should be a minimum of three minutes long.
Step 5: Students will either decide to film their project (Using Miss B’s Camera) at school or at home (Using their own device)
- Remember, Miss B has to be able to view your final product to give you your final grade. Remember to be creative and try to create a sense of 1950’s in your interview. (Backdrop, style, radio voice, advertisement, etc.)
These interviews are only for Miss B’s eyes and will not be posted online.
The final due date for your assignment is Friday, March 18th. Please ensure that you have a copy into Miss B by this date. Remember, these can be filmed at school if a time to get together cannot be arranged.

Hello Parents,
This just a general update for the month of March. Students have a field trip on the 15th that I will need drivers for. We will be gone for only part of the day and I will send home more information about the trip.

Our spelling test will be completed this Thursday as Friday is a Pro D day. In English, we are working on how to create a story that flows and does not have random facts, characters, and events that do not have any relevance to the story. In math we are working on our fractions unit and students are doing quite well with this unit. In science we are a couple of lessons away from completing our unit on the human body. Today we studied the parts of the brain and performed several activities using our senses of smell, taste, and sight. We are working on our heroes unit in Social Studies and have begun a mini-poster project on a hero of their choice. We will be completing this project during class time.

Please continue to sign your child's planner each night as this communicates to me that you are involved in your child's learning. I realize we all live very busy lives but this is not just a good practice method, it is a required part of our parent/teacher communication.

Hello Parents and Students,

Wow, the BCA World Tour has ended and I'm sure we can all breathe a sigh of relief. However, for me that sigh is not very long as this is also FSA time and will very shortly be report card time again. However, take cheer as there are only about 20 days until March break.

Tomorrow the grade 4's will be completing their online FSA math test. The rest of their FSA testing will be completed next week. Students also have a test in Science on the skeletal system, the muscular system, and the skin. We have completed a review in class which includes questions to study from as well as highlighting all of the important information in our notes. Wednesday is our special parent assembly and we are looking forward to seeing you there. Friday is also hot lunch day and the students are going to be having pizza. (If you filled out your order forms)....

Just a reminder that spelling tests are now back on track and students should be studying their words at home during the week.

Hello everyone,
School is flying by with BCA's World Tour around the corner. Student's final reports are due tomorrow for their in-class grade. I will be marking these final drafts and if there are any mistakes, students should retype them at home so that they can have a perfect copy for the judges. We are also working on our speeches tomorrow for an hour in-class. Whatever does not get completed during this time, needs to be completed at home. Students should be practicing this speech at home, in front of their parents, relatives, and the mirror if there in no one else to listen to them. Remember, students are supposed to have become an expert on their country. If they can't tell you the history of how their country came to be and know all about it, they have some work to do.

In science, we have been working on learning the main bones in the human skeleton and the muscle groups. In socials, we have completed some in-class group reports on the gold rush, fur trade, and cannery industries. Students will be starting a mini unit on Canadian heroes next. In English, we have been reading "Number the Stars". This is a great book that allows us to learn about Denmark, WWII, and the Jewish people. In Mathematics, we are just completing a unit on Measurement and will be having our test on Tuesday.

I know all of you are working very hard at home and I'm sure we will all breathe a sigh of relief when February 10th rolls around. Keep up the good work and if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email, call the school, or talk to me in person.

Blog Update

Hello Parents,
We've had a very busy, exciting week at school. Students have had tests this week as well as a great time with "Avalanche Ava". You will notice that I have deleted the followers off of my blog. This is for safety purposes as the function did not work like I had anticipated it would. (You did not get automatic updates). Just a word of caution for parents, if you do not know what Buzz is, you need to make sure you know what your child is doing on the Internet. I'm very concerned about this and if you would like to have a private conversation about this topic, I would be happy to help any parent that maybe isn't aware of what this function on the internet is.

Students have been busy writing their socials reports in class. I hope project boards are starting to take shape in many homes. The students have less than two weeks of in-class days before the fair on February the 10th. Please have them reading their books at home as it is very hard to write a report if you do not know about your country.

Welcome Back!

Hello parents,
Welcome back to school and your busy lives. One week has already flown by and we have some exciting things going on this month. We have an in-class science presentation on "Gobs, Goo and Guts" coming into our class on the 18th. This will be a great time of learning about the digestive and muscular systems of the body. They will have real examples and I'm the sure the students will really enjoy this.
I am planning on having our science test on the 20th after the lab and will be sending a review sheet home with your child by the end of this week.

In socials students are creating mini-expert project on the gold rush, salmon canneries, and the fur trade. In math we have started a new unit on measurement and the grade 5's are still figuring out the difference between area and perimeter. In English, we have started reading "Number the Stars" which is a great book about a young girl and her experiences during WWII. We will also begin some preparations for FSA's this week and will be completing the field test online with the grade 4's.

Please also send research books or print outs of information on your child's country to school with them ASAP as we need to start writing our papers. I noticed some of the books brought in are quite advanced and definitely not written at a grade 4/5 level. See if you can find those great books written for children on your child's country. Ask at the library or order them in from other libraries. This will make my job a lot easier if they have text they can read and decipher for themselves.

Holidays are almost here!

Hello parents,

Wow, the time is really flying by. I just thought I'd send out an update of what our next week is going to look like. I have asked the students to bring in their clothes on Monday. I will have a place to hang them up so they do not get wrinkly. I wanted them to do this so that I can check to make sure that they all have proper attire before our dress rehearsal on Wednesday. Please have their skirts, pants, shirts, and such ironed before bringing to school. Remember, they are little business people so please have them dressed accordingly. Also, if you could label their items and send a small paper that lists what articles of clothing they brought to school, that would be great. This will make it easier for me to ensure that everyone gets back all of their articles of clothing and that nothing gets lost.

Students are also supposed to buy a small gift (up to $10.00 for their gender) and bring this to school on Thursday. Thursday will also be our class party in the afternoon. Students can bring goodies to school but I'd like to stay away from toooooo much candy as they still need to be awake and focused for the Christmas concert that afternoon. If you could shoot me a quick email or write it in your child's planner what they could contribute to our party, that would be great. We don't need a ton of stuff. I was thinking maybe some cupcakes, fruit, chips, and a couple bottles of pop would be lots. Anyways, let me know.

On Monday I will also be handing back their unit 3 math tests on multiplication and division of whole numbers. I was very pleased with their test results. We are studying the human body now in science as well as early pioneer's in socials.

We will see you on Friday at the skating rink.

December 1st Update

Hello parents,
Well, today was the big day of report cards. Just a reminder that we have parent teacher interviews on Monday. Also, please remember to return the envelope your report card was given in to me. I do not teach your child music, computers, French, Art, and Health and Careers. If you have questions about these subjects, it would probably be best to address your concerns to that specific teacher as I may not know the specifics of what is happening in their classes.

Students have started to practice their Christmas play. While we are practicing at school, they need to be working on their memorization at home. I will be asking for costumes to be sent to school on Monday, December 13th. Most of the children are either lawyers, advertising executives, or accountants. Clothes such as business outfits will work perfectly. Ex) Suit, tie, dress shoes, blazers, etc.

Just a friendly reminder that students were supposed to have their times tables to 9 memorized by Christmas time. *** I am seeing students who still don't know them. This means that they need to be practiced. I also need to see planners signed everyday. If you could work this into your home's daily routine, that would be greatly appreciated! We only have about ten days until Christmas holidays.

November Update!

I can't believe the month of November is already almost gone. The weather we are having is also so cold I feel like I'm back in Saskatchewan. This week is very short so, there are a few things that parents need to know.

Students were sent home a social studies review on Early Immigrants to Canada today. They should also have a set of notes on Immigration, Emigration, and Push and Pull Factors. We have been reviewing this material in class, and will be having a test on Wednesday. I am quite amazed at my little bunch of history buffs. Please remember to be involved with their studying process as most children this age need guidance with the studying process. One way to help your child is to make simple questions out of their review sheet. Such as, what are four push factors and four pull factors? How can you remember the difference between immigration and emigration? If they need to remember a specific name, have them write this name out five times. Make up an mnemonic for a list of things such as ELFG for the names of the countries that the Acadians were sent to. (They should know this already as we have practiced in class.)

Read A Rama

Just a reminder to everyone that tomorrow is ReadARama. We will be doing this tomorrow afternoon. Students may bring some snacks but I'd rather not have too much junk food. They may also want to bring a blanket or a pillow to use while they are laying on the floor. However, we will not be building forts as I think a lot of "fun" is had building the fort and not as much reading actually takes place. If they have a book they are reading at home or books that they would like to share with friends, that would be great. I am going to let them do a mini book talk to get others interested in reading a book that they have previously read. So, if they could bring a book from home that they really enjoyed, that would be great.

November 16th Update!

Wow, what a busy week we had at school last week. It seemed to fly by and our long awaited LaFontaines have all flown home. This week we started the week out with our in-class spelling bee. Hopefully we will find out tomorrow, who has qualified in our class for this. The school spelling bee will take place this Friday.

Today, the students are writing their science test. It is very apparent the ones who were well prepared today as they had been studying over the last two weeks at home. Good job parents, I'm sure your son/daughter's marks will reflect this diligence.

We will also be having a quiz next week on Tuesday to wrap up our early immigrants to Canada section. We have reviewed from the time of the first French and English Immigrants to when the Underground Railroad was taking place during the Civil War. That's a lot of history. I hope my dramatizations of these events haven't been too harmful to your peaceful home :) I have heard the students when they are together asking whether or or not they would be a Patriot or Loyalist. They will get a review in class on Thursday which will help guide their studying at home. To help your child study, go over the questions on the review outline. If they can't answer them or are confused about a question, the day of the test is not the time to ask for clarification.

Just a reminder to keep working on your child's multiplication facts. If you are not sure whether your child knows them well enough or not, send me an email or simply perform a quick quiz at home. "What's 7 X 6 ummmmmmmmmmm........ " Need to practice more.

Snow/ Ski Pass

Hello parents,
I am sending home the snow/ski passes that the province of BC gives out for grade 4/5 students. I think it would be awesome if everyone would apply for the pass as I could take the students skiing for one of our winter field trips. The cost to apply for a pass is the $20.00 mailing and handling fee. I'm not sure if you can get one if you are an American resident. I would call the number and check as your child attends school in Canada. This pass would let them go skiing three times for free at the participating mountains. You can read the form for the rest of the information.

Also, I'm sure your child would appreciate you attending the Remembrance Day Ceremony if you are able to. We will be singing a song for the Veterans.

Week Reminders!

Hello parents and students,

Here is a few reminders for the week. The grade 4's are going to have their unit 2 test on whole numbers this Wednesday. I have given them an extra day to review at home for their test. Today they were sent home with a review sheet to practice for their test. Please go over the questions with your son or daughter. The sheet has a section for your signature and I would appreciate you sending the sheet back signed as well as the math work.

The grade 5's are starting their next unit on multiplication and division of whole numbers. It is becoming very apparent those who still do not know their multiplication tables. This needs to be skill taught through repetition and drill. Please take five minutes every other day and see if your child knows them. If not, this needs to be improved before Christmas. As you get into the higher grades, multiplication is an essential math skill that will leave your child far behind if not acquired at this grade level. We do cover mad minutes in class, but this is not enough. Multiplication cards can be bought at a dollar store. Thank you for this support at home.

The 4's and 5's are really looking forward to their field trip this Thursday. Please remember to send a bag lunch, jacket (waterproof preferable), and comfortable walking shoes with them. In science tomorrow, their past and present compound machines will also be presented. Also, in social studies we have started to learn about early immigrants to Canada. Tomorrow we will be learning about the loyalist to the British Crown as well as a little bit of American Revolution history. I bet all my American parents are excited about that!!

New Assignment Sent Home

We are coming to the end of our simple and compound machines unit. As such, the students have been assigned some research and picture gathering at home. The assignment sheet will be sent home with students today. Read over the assignment with them as they will need your support. Here is an outline of the assignment:

Machines – Then and Now
Assignment Due Date: November 2nd

Demonstrate Your Learning:
1. Choose an activity in British Columbia’s historyh that required the use of simple or compound machines. This can be from Aboriginal people or early settlers in B.C. Thinen k of the machines that they used to harvest resources, to trasport people, or to make work easier in some way.
Possible Projects (May choose something different as long as it connects)
- carving canoes, cutting down trees, mining, fishing, transportation, preserving or preparing food, building homes, etc.
2. Use your internet at home or the library to find information about the use of machines in the activity you choose.
3. Create a bristol board poster with the title of your activity.
4. Create the headings, then and now. Under each heading, draw or paste pictures that show the machine being used. Write a couple of sentences explaining each picture or, write a detailed paragraph that will be attached to your poster. The written information should describe how the simple or compound machine was used in the past or how it is used now.

Marking:
/2 Clear Heading and Titles
/10 Poster is attractive with pictures under correct headings
/5 Student effort put into assignment (You need to do this not mom)
/10 Written descriptions give reader important information about how the tool was used in the past and present
/3 Spelling and Grammar

* Students will need to print off the pictures at home and I will send the bristol board home with them next week. However, the first step would be to choose what machine or industry they want to focus on. Then they need to find pictures to put on their posters along with information. If they bring this information to class, I will give them class time to work on it. We have science every Tuesday and Thursday.

Just a quick note to let you know how wonderful your children were at the care-home today. They did such a great job and the elderly people really appreciated their visit. They were very well behaved and brought their sonshine with them! A quick reminder that tomorrow is the Socials test and that their spelling will be due on Wednesday. The long vowel sounds are a little tricky as some words have two such as la and zy in lazy. Also, pi and o in piano. Don't get too stressed with this lesson as it is more on the phonics side of spelling. The bonus words will be axle and inclined plane.

Also, Sister Sally gave me a great link for French pronunciations. I have added it to our list of blog links. It has been very helpful during studying and especially for some of us whose backgrounds in French may be limited.

A Happy Thanksgiving!!

Just wishing all parents and students a wonderful Thanksgiving. We have so much to be thankful for.

Just a quick reminder that we have a spelling test every Friday. It would be beneficial to go over the words with your child at home to see if they can spell them correctly. This extra practice really becomes apparent on their test scores. We will also be going as a class to the care home on the 18th so, we will be practicing our songs in full force this coming week. In Social Studies there will be a quiz coming up on the Earth's continents, oceans, hemispheres, and map symbols next week.

October 1st Update!

Dear Parents,
The month of October is just beginning and the first month of school has come to an end. This past month saw many activities and getting students back into the routines of school. In math, we just finished our patterns and equations unit. I was very pleased with the result as our class average was well over 80%. As this is probably one of our most difficult units, this made me hopeful for the rest of the year. I have also booked our class in at Zion Lutheran Carehome and we will be going to sing and perform reader's theater for the elderly. This will take place on October the 18th and I'll be sending a note home. In the first week in November we will also be visiting the BC Mining Museum to look at all of their compound machines and one of BC's main natural resource industry. Just a quick note to say that my email has also been down for the last two weeks and I am hoping to remedy this today. I will send out an email to let you know that it is working again. So, any corspondence until that time would be through notes in your child's agenda books. Remember to keep signing the agenda book each night as this shows that you are monitoring your child's agenda and are assisting them at home.

I just thought I'd post some pictures of a science lab we did with force, slope, and motion. This week seemed to fly by. Just a reminder that tomorrow is bring your cans in, hot lunch, and casual day. We also presented our Reader's Theater to the grade 2/3's. The 4/5's did an amazing job!! I wish I would have recorded it so you could have seen their presentations. In math, the grade 4's are finishing up their unit on patterns and equations. We should be able to take their unit test on Monday. So, their math should be reviewed over the weekend. I would recommend looking over their homework book assignments as these will be very similar to questions they will find on their test. The 5's will be finishing up their unit early next week and completing their test before the weeks end.

Second Week Almost Completed!

Hello everyone,
Today is our socials test on the map of Canada. Hopefully all the students will do really well on this. We have been working hard on our math this week and will hopefully finish our third lesson in the Patterns and Equations Unit. If everyone could pick up a set of flash cards from the dollar store to use at home, that would be great. I hear they are only a dollar for a package. Student's personal newspapers are also due on Friday. Please check with your son or daughter to see if they are finished. We have had 4 1 hour periods to work on these so they should be very near completion.

Our First Week Completed!

Wow, I can't believe that our first week of school has flown by. It seems we did a lot of organization this week and getting ourselves back into the swing of things. This week we did some diagnostic tests to see what level of spelling your child was performing at. These results were sent home. Just a note to remember that this is only one test and is not a form of conclusive evidence.

We also did a readiness check in math. Worked on our personal newspapers in English (Please bring a picture in for Monday), and began our math unit on patterns and equations. In Science we began our unit on Forces and Machines. I thought this was pertinent to start the year with because of all the construction happening outside on our new school. In Socials we have reviewed the map of Canada and will be having a test on this coming Thursday. Please have your son or daughter practice these at home. They should also be able to spell the provinces, territories, and capitals correctly.

There are just a few changes to note on the school supply list. The students will need 3 more 1" binders, 1 pkg. of paper dividers, and a small GB Memory Stick (just bring a small one to school labelled with your child's name).
